This is an excerpt from Tomas Vitali’s Ciaconna (Chaconne) played on a special Stradivarius model by Salvadore de Durro. Note how tiny the chinrest is. She’s sight reading the Chaconne (doing a sound test), so forgive any imperfections. She covers them up with vibrato! Very beautiful sound…

Antique Violins – Listen to This One

The sound of this violin is beautiful. According to the player “this violin was originally all dark colored which was very much in vogue apparently in the 1880-1920 period. The areas at the? shoulders are lighter because of wear from playing over the years. This effect is often copied in an attempt to provide an “antiqued” look. Also, on older violins, you may see darkening due to rosin buildup…usually in the area between the end of the sound board and the top of the taipiece (around the bridge).
